9.1. 

ADP/General Communication Conditions 

I cannot communicate with the RiverSurveyor system or ADP. 

This could be either a hardware or software issue that affects the communications interface. 
Note: Cables and connectors are one of the highest causes of problems with field equipment; you 
should make every attempt to take good care of all cables and connectors. 

• 

Check the cables between the computer and the ADP, or between the computer and the ra-

dio modem used with RiverCat systems. RiverCat users may want to connect their ADP di-
rectly to the computer; this could help determine if there are modem-related problems. 

• 

Check the power cable to the ADP, or check the batteries inside the RiverCat to make sure 

they are within specifications. 

• 

Make sure you have connected the serial cable to the correct serial port on the computer. In 

most cases, the Communications port should be set to COM1 and the baud rate set to 9600. 

• 

Check for any memory-resident programs running on your computer that may be accessing 

the serial port. These programs may interfere with other programs trying to access the com-
puter serial ports. The most common type of memory-resident programs that interfere with 
serial communications are PDA or Pocket PC synchronization programs. Close these pro-
grams down if they are causing the problem.

Use the 

SonUtils

 program to verify what COM ports are available on your computer. 

• 

The 

Status

 field in the 

Systems

 dialog box (§

7.3.3

) for the ADP may display a message that 

says Invalid – Click here for information. Clicking on this link will open a troubleshooting 
dialog box, which will describe possible causes and solutions. 

The ADP indicator light is constantly red or keeps turning red. 

This could be either a hardware or software issue that affects the communications interface.
