7.3.3. Communications Menu
The
Communications Menu
.
Systems (Ctrl+S)
Use this menu item (or the
Systems
icon
) to show the
Systems
). This box is used as the central “hub” for setting up and establishing communication with
the ADP, the External / Internal GPS, and the Echo Sounder. The list displayed in the box has a
row for each system type and columns for the associated setup parameters. The last-used settings
for each system will be recalled and automatically displayed each time the program is started.
Each system uses the following parameters.
•
Com
– The serial port to which the system is connected. This setting displays
Disabled
the
first time the program is started. Subsequently, it will be updated to match the last success-
ful connection. Only valid computer serial ports are displayed.
•
Baud Rate
– The baud rate of the serial connection. The default is the most commonly used
for each system type: 9600 for an ADP, 4800 for an External GPS, and 9600 for an Echo
Sounder. This setting will be updated to match the last successful connection.
•
Properties
– Select this option to show the properties specific to each system. This option
also lets you display incoming system data and troubleshoot communications problems.
•
Status
– Gives information as to the current state of the system’s connection to the
River-
Surveyor
program.

Disabled
– The communications parameters for this system have not been configured.
This item is displayed in gray.

Click here to check
– The communications parameters have been set. When clicked,
Riv-
erSurveyor
will search for the system using the current communications settings and ver-
ify the connection is valid. If
Automatic Verification
is
On
,
RiverSurveyor
automatically
searches for the system after the communications parameters are set. This item is dis-
played in gray.

Found – click here to check again
– The system has been found using the current commu-
nications settings. If you change the physical connection to the system (computer cable
or serial port), you should verify the connection again. This item is displayed in green.

Invalid – click here for information
– System communications are unsuccessful or the sys-
tem has transmitted invalid data. This is typically caused by incorrect communications
settings or a bad connection. Click this link for more information as to possible causes
and solutions. If the suggestions do not solve the problem, see
for more information. This item is displayed in red.
