To calculate the total discharge for a section using
RiverSurveyor
during post-processing:
1. Open the data file using
File|Open
(or press
Ctrl+O
).
2. Select the file that you want to load; click
Open
.
3. When
the
ADP File Information
dialog box opens, click
OK
.
4. Select
Processing|Discharge Calculation
(or press
Ctrl+D
).
5. The
Discharge Calculation
dialog box (
) will appear, showing the values that
were entered during data collection.
6. Confirm the numbers entered during data collection and make any necessary changes.
7. Enter
the
Profile used for bank discharge
for both the left and right banks. This profile is
the first (or last for the end edge) valid profile that best represents the water velocities
nearest to each bank. By default this value is the first profile for the loaded data set (usu-
ally 3). This value can be used to eliminate any bad or unrepresentative data at the start
(or end) of the measurement. In all cases, the profile number for the start bank side will
be lower than the profile for the end bank side.
8. Click
RECOMPUTE
to recalculate the discharge values.
The
Discharge Calculation
dialog box (
) displays several calculated values related to
the measurement. These values are updated to when you click
RECOMPUTE
to reflect changes.
Calculated Parameters – Discharge:
•
Total Measured Discharge
– The actual discharge measured by the ADP.
•
Computed Top Discharge
– The calculated discharge for the top area.
•
Computed Bottom Discharge
– The calculated discharge for the bottom area.
•
Computed Left Discharge
– The calculated discharge for the left edge.
•
Computed Right Discharge
– The calculated discharge for the right edge.
•
Total Computed Discharge
– The total discharge for the entire cross-section (i.e., the sum of
the measured and computed discharge values).
Calculated Parameters – Quality Parameters:
•
% Measured Discharge
– The percent of the total discharge that was measured (i.e.,
Total
Measured Discharge / Total Computed Discharge
).
•
Total Width
– The total cross-sectional distance including edges (i.e.,
Distance to Left bank +
Distance Made Good + Distance to Right Bank
).
•
Maximum Depth
– The maximum depth recorded for the entire section.
•
Maximum Depth Averaged Velocity
– Maximum depth-averaged velocity for entire section.
•
Maximum Boat Speed
– The maximum boat speed recorded for the entire section. This is
useful as a qualitative guide for the measurement. It is good practice to keep the vessel
speed equal to or less than the water velocity (when possible).
•
Maximum Pitch
– The maximum pitch recorded for the entire section.
•
Maximum Roll
– The maximum roll recorded for the entire section.
Other controls available in the
Discharge Calculation
) include:
•
RECOMPUTE
– Recompute all calculated values. Click this control after you make
any
changes to values in the Discharge Calculation dialog.
•
Shallow Water Operation
– Check this box to use the shallow-water cell in the calculation of
total discharge. If this box is not checked, the shallow water information will not be used,
and the top discharge area will extend down to the top of the first cell.
