Securing a person to a crane
General
From a standing height of 2 meters a fall arrester is mandatory.
Generally cranes must never be used for protecting people against falls. Only in justified special cases
it is allowed to secure people using the crane while complying with specific parameters and fulfilling
exactly defined preconditions.

Purpose
Under certain conditions it may be impossible to use technical protective equipment against falls and
the usual attachment devices. In such a case the person can be protected against falls with the crane.

To be heeded prior to securing anyone:
conditions, requirements and form ‘Mobile crane at a standstill used
as optional anchoring for personal protective equipment against
falls’; see working paper of the industry group 'D-A-CH-S Fall
protection'.

For every specific application there must be a written risk assessment and work instructions from the
employer, in which the anchorage points and rescue plan must be defined (refer to form of the industry
group ‘D-A-CH-S Fall protection’.
Caution!
If anyone is being lifted by the crane, there is an acute risk of falling or
crushing and thus a risk of fatal injury.
What is not allowed:
x
Lifting people with the crane. This is forbidden even when the people are protected by a fall
arrester.
x
Load transport while a person is being secured.
x
Jumping into the safety harness. Safety harnesses into which a person has fallen must be
examined by an expert (e.g. the manufacturer) and where necessary discarded.
x
To transport persons to and from the place of work, except for rescue purposes.
x
Crane operation by the person secured to the crane.
