4.5. Adjusting sheet guide and air wipe heat
levels
The sheet guides are heated and can be controlled to a constant
temperature. This heat prevents water condensation on the guides and
sensor windows as the heads move on and offsheet.
Heat for the sheet guides is provided from two sources. The heated
external air wipe system provides heat for the sheet guides and sensor
windows. The temperature of the heated air wipe is thermostatically
controlled. The thermostat is mounted to the top of the ECU and the
temperature-measuring thermistor is mounted in the sheet guide.
For higher temperatures, heaters within the sheet guide provide
additional heat. In each head, the sheet guide heater is a series of strip
heaters embedded in the sheet guide. An integral thermostat mounted on
the heating element protects the unit from overheating. These embedded
heaters can either be on all the time, off all the time, or on only when
offsheet. One of these three settings is selected by a jumper on the end-bell
termination board. Once their power is connected, the heaters produce a
constant level of heat. However, heat levels from the air wipe system vary
in response to changing ambient temperature, as measured by a
thermistor in the sheet guides.
The next subsections describe how to connect power to the heaters and
how to adjust the temperature setpoint of the air wipe heater.
4.5.1. Connecting the sheet guide heaters
The Precision Platform is shipped with the sheet guide heaters
disconnected. If sheet temperatures exceed 57°C (135°F), the power to the
sheet guide heaters must be connected. Once the power is connected, the
heaters remain on.
To apply power to the heaters:
1.
Remove the plastic strip located on the side of the head above the
sheet guide.
2.
Locate the two sheet guide heater wires and pins 1 and 5 within the
cavity that is now exposed.
