Internal environment control for the heads and
PMP enclosure
The Precision Platform Scanner uses fluid, air, heaters, fans, controllers,
thermistors, and other devices to control the internal environments of the
heads and end bell electronics. The sensors and other electronics within the
heads have precise temperature and humidity requirements.
5.8.1.1.
Cooling fluid systems
There are two Precision Platform Scanner configurations for supplying
cooling fluid to the PrecisionPak4 heads:
•
Potable water from an external source - for example, drinking
quality mill water- supplies the heads (open loop). The supply
water must be filtered.
•
Coolant from a water-to-water heat exchanger or a chiller
supplies the heads (closed loop).
Using potable water (open loop)
Potable water can be used to cool the heads using an open-loop cooling
configuration with an external potable water source.
Using a water-to-water heat exchanger cooling system (closed loop)
If the ambient temperature around the scanner and heads is 66°C (150°F) or
less, a Honeywell Water-to-Water Heat Exchanger unit can be used in a
closed loop to cool the heads.
The Water-to-Water Heat Exchanger unit primary cooling system is
preferred over an open-loop water system because it is a closed system with
chemically-treated water to cool the heads. The treated water does not have
the minerals and contaminants that mill water contains. Mill water can plug
the valves and cooling lines. The Water-to-Water Heat Exchanger solves
this problem and requires very little maintenance. Perform preventive
maintenance procedures as recommended in Chapter 9.
Using coolant from a chiller (closed loop)
If the ambient temperature is above 60°C (150°F), but less than the
maximum temperature of the scanner, use a chiller system.
