When the ambient temperature around the chiller exceeds 43
°
C (110
°
F)
most chillers will show a dramatic reduction in cooling capacity. In such
an environment, use the Honeywell 1-hp chiller. This chiller includes an
extra fluid-cooled condenser that turns on automatically when the
ambient temperature around the chiller reaches 43
°
C (110
°
F).
Alternately, a water-cooled, closed-loop water chiller could be used. The
heat is transferred to the water instead of the air so this type of chiller
works better in hot environments.
2.12.6.3. Body and condenser fins
These specifications are necessary to prevent corrosion and other damage:
•
All steel parts should be galvanized or double-coated with a
zinc-based epoxy undercoat and two epoxy or polyurethane
overcoats.
•
Condenser fins should be aluminum or copper. These fins are
usually very thin and are subject to corrosion. They can be
polyurethane-coated to provide extra corrosion resistance, but
this reduces cooling capacity.
•
Consult mill maintenance personnel to ensure that chiller
materials and coatings are appropriate for the chemical
conditions of the local environment.
2.12.6.4. Reservoir
The chiller reservoir should have these characteristics:
•
Open reservoir with lid, located above the water pump
•
40 liter (10-gallon) minimum capacity
•
Sight glass level indicator (optional), located in the reservoir
•
Bypass valve on the water pump, set at 3.5 bar (50 psig), to
allow coolant shutoff
•
Analog controls (preferred over digital because of the corrosive
environment)
