disassem bly o f the internal R -4 com pressor cylinder and
shaft assem bly.
If the R -4 C om pressor Internal C ylinder and Shaft
A ssem bly is to be serviced or replaced, then the oil in the
R -4 com pressor m ust be drained, m easured and replaced
according to "C.C.O.T. Refrigerant Oil Distribution" in the
A ir C onditioning section to determ ine addition o f proper oil
quantity to n ew assembly.
A clean workbench, preferably covered with a sheet o f
clean paper, orderliness in the work area and a place for all
parts being rem oved and replaced is o f great im portance, as
is the use o f the proper, clean service tools. A n y attem pt to
use m ake-shift or inadequate equipm ent m ay result in
dam age a n d /o r improper com pressor operation.
These procedures are based on the use o f the proper
service tools and the condition that an adequate stock o f
service parts is available. A ll parts required for servicing the
internal com pressor are protected by a preservation process
and packaged in a m anner w hich w ill elim inate the necessity
o f cleaning, washing or flushing o f the parts. The parts can
be used in the internal assem bly just as they are rem oved
from the service package.

Seal Leak Detention
A shaft seal should not be changed because o f an oil-
line on the hood insulator. T he Seal is designed to seep som e
oil for lubrication purposes. O nly change a Shaft Seal when
a leak is detected by evidence o f oil sprayed in large am ounts
and then only after actual refrigerant leakage is determined
by test.
Should an R -4 C om pressor Shaft Seal ever have to be
replaced because it was determ ined to be the cause o f
excessive signs o f oil leakage in the A /C system , then the
accum ulator in this R -4 system m ust also be rem oved from
the vehicle; the oil in the accum ulator then m ust be drained,
m easured and replaced according to "C.C.O.T. Refrigerant
O il Distribution" in the A ir C onditioning section to
determ ine oil loss.

5. T horoughly clean inside o f com pressor neck area
surrounding the shaft, the exposed portion o f the seal seat
and the shaft itself.
This is absolutely necessary to
prevent any d irt or foreign material from getting
into compressor.
6.
Place Seal Protector J-22974 over the end o f the shaft
to prevent chipping the ceram ic seat. Fully engage the
knurled tangs o f Seal Seat R em over-Installer J-23128 into
the recessed portion o f the seal seat by turning the handle
clockwise.

NOTICE:
D O N O T tighten the handle with a wrench
or pliers; however, the handle m ust be hand-tightened
securely to rem ove the Seat.
