open oil passages.

20. Inspect direct clutch bushings for damage or

scoring.

Reassem bly

1. Install clutch apply ring on piston.

2. Install new inner and outer seals on piston with lips

facing away from clutch apply ring side. (Figures 7 A 1-116

and 7A 1-115).

3. Install new center seal on direct clutch housing with

lip facing up. (Figure 7A 1-117).

4. Install seal protector J-25010. (Figure 7A 1-118).

NOTICE:

U se extrem e care w hen installing direct

clutch piston past larger direct clutch snap ring groove.

G roove could cut outer seal on piston.

5. Oil seals and install direct clutch piston. (Figure

7 A 1 -1 18).

NOTICE:

T o make the piston easier to install, insert

tool between seal and housing; rotate tool around the

housing to com press the lip o f the seal, w hile pushing

down slightly on the piston. See tool Figure 7A 1-119

and tool being used on a forward clutch (Figure 7A 1-

130).

6. R em ove seal protector J-25010.

7. Install release spring guide w ith the om itted rib over

the check ball in the piston, as show n in Figure 7A 1-120.

8. Install retainer and spring assembly.

A ll m odels use a retainer and spring assem bly w ith ten

(10) release springs.

NOTICE:

R etainer could locate in snap ring groove and

forcing retainer to com press springs, cou ld damage

retainer plate when installing.
