1 D-2 AIR C O N D IT IO N IN G COMPRESSOR OVERHAUL
They have been prepared in sequence in order o f
accessibility o f the com ponents. Pad fender/skirt and secure
com pressor near top o f fender skirt w ith wire, rope, etc.
when performing on-car service.
W hen an A -6 or R -4 com pressor is rem oved from the
vehicle for servicing, the am ount o f oil rem aining in the
com pressor should be drained and m easured. This oil should
then be discarded and new 525 viscosity refrigerant oil
added to the com pressor (See Figure ID -1, and "C.C.O.T.
Refrigerant Oil Distribution" in the A ir C onditioning
section).
Should an A -6 com pressor, its com pressor shaft seal or
any other com ponent ever be rem oved for servicing because
it was determ ined to be the cause o f excessive signs o f oil
leakage in the A /C system , then the oil in the A -6
com pressor m ust be drained,
m easured and replaced
according to "C.C.O.T. Refrigerant Oil Distribution" in the
A ir C onditioning section to determine oil loss. The
accum ulator in this A -6 system then must also be removed
- oil drained - measured, etc. according to sam e section.
NOTICE:
D o not kink or place excessive tension on
refrigerant lines or hoses.
M IN O R REPAIR PROCEDURES FOR
THE A-6 COMPRESSOR
THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS TO THE A-6
COMPRESSOR CLUTCH PLATE AND HUB, PULLEY
AND BEARING, AND COIL AND HOUSING ARE
COVERED AS "MINOR" BECAUSE THEY M AY BE
PERFORMED
W ITH O U T
FIRST
PURGING
THE
SYSTEM OR REMOVING THE COMPRESSOR FROM
THE VEHICLE.
The C om pressor Shaft Seal assembly, Pressure R elief
Valve and Pressure Switch m ay also be serviced W IT H O U T
R E M O V IN G T H E C O M P R E S S O R from the vehicle but
these operations are covered later in this section as "Major
R epair Procedures" because the system M U S T F IR ST BE
P U R G E D o f R efrigerant-12.
Illustrations used in describing these operations show
the com pressor rem oved from the vehicle only to m ore
clearly illustrate the various operations.
W hen servicing the com pressor, rem ove only the
necessary com ponents that prelim inary diagnosis indicates
are in need o f service. Refer to the A IR C O N D IT IO N IN G
section and Figure ID -2 and Figure ID -3 for inform ation
relative to parts nom enclature and location.
R em oval and illustration o f external com pressor
com ponents and disassem bly and assem bly o f internal
com ponents m ust be perform ed on a clean workbench.
The
work area, tools, and parts must be kept clean at all
times.
Parts Tray J-9402 (Figure ID -38) should be used for
all A -6 internal com pressor parts being rem oved, as w ell as
for replacement parts.
A-6 COMPRESSOR CLUTCH PLATE
AND HUB ASSEMBLY
Remove
1.
Place H olding Fixture J-9396 in a vise and clam p the
com pressor in the H olding Fixture.
Figure 1D-1 A-6 Compressor
2. K eep clutch hub from turning with Clutch H ub
H older J-25030 or J-9403, and rem ove locknut from end o f
shaft using T hin W all Socket J-9399 (Figure ID -4).
NOTICE:
T o avoid internal dam age to the com pressor,
D O N O T D R IV E O R P O U N D on the Clutch Plate
and H ub assem bly O R on the end o f the shaft. If proper
tools to rem ove and replace clutch parts are not used,
it is possible to disturb the position o f the axial plate
(keyed to the m ain shaft), resulting in com pressor
dam age and seal leakage due to shifting o f the
crankshaft.
3. Thread C lutch Plate and H ub assembly R em over
J-9401 into hub. H old body o f R em over with a wrench and
tighten center screw to rem ove Clutch Plate and Hub
assem bly (Figure ID -5).
4. R em ove square drive key from shaft or drive plate
hub.
5. R em ove hub spacer retainer ring using Snap-Ring
Pliers J-5403 ( # 2 1 ) , and then rem ove hub spacer (Figure
ID -6).
6. Inspect driven plate for cracks or stresses in the drive
surface. D o not replace driven plate for a scoring condition
(Figure ID -7).
If the frictional surface shows signs o f damage due
to excessive heat, the Clutch Plate, Hub, Pulley and
Bearing should be replaced. Check further for the
underlying cause o f the dam age (i.e. low coil-voltage - coil
should draw 3.2 am ps at 12 volts - or binding o f the
com pressor internal m echanism
(cylinder and shaft
assembly), clutch air gap too w ide (see Figure I D - 11),
broken drive plate to hub assem bly sprints, etc.
Replace
1. Insert the square drive key into the hub o f driven
plate; allow it to project approxim ately 3/16" out o f the
keyway.
_
2. Line up the key in the hub w ith key way
in the shaft
(Figure ID -8).
