3. R em ove the clutch plates from the direct clutch
housing and keep them separated from the forward clutch
plates. (See C lutch Plate U sage Chart, Figure 7A 1-96).
4. Inspect com position-faced plates and steel clutch
plates for wear or burning.
5. Inspect clutch backing plate for scoring or other
damage.
6. U sing J-23327, com press retainer and spring
assem bly (Figure 7A 1-114), rem ove snap ring and inspect
for dam age or distortion.
7. R em ove J-23327.
8. R em ove retainer and spring assem bly from housing.
9. Inspect release spring retainer for being collapsed.
10. Inspect release springs for being collapsed.
11. R em ove release spring guide and inspect for
damage.
12. R em ove direct clutch piston.
13. R em ove outer and inner seals from direct clutch
piston and discard. (Figures 7 A 1-115 and 7A 1-116).
14. D o not rem ove the clutch apply ring from the piston
unless the piston or apply ring requires replacement.

15. Inspect direct clutch piston assembly for distortion,
cracks, dam age and check ball for free operation.
NOTICE:

16. R em ove center seal from direct clutch housing and
discard. (Figure 7A 1-117).
