1. Install H olding Fixture J-8763-02 on transm ission
and place into H olding T ool base J-3289-20 with converter
facing up (fig. 7A -2B ).
C leanliness is an im portant factor in the overhaul o f
the transm ission. Before attem pting any disassem bly
operation, the exterior o f the case should be thoroughly
cleaned to prevent the possibility o f dirt entering the
transm ission internal m echanism . D uring disassem bly, all
parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid and
then air dried. W iping cloths or rags should not be used to
dry parts.
N O TIC E:
D o not use solvents w hich could dam age
rubber seals or clutch facings.
2. W ith transm ission in holding fixture rem ove torque
converter assembly.
3. R em ove vacuum m odulator assem bly attaching bolt
and retainer.
4. R em ove vacuum m odulator assem bly, "O" ring seal,
and m odulator valve from case (fig. 7A -3B ). D iscard "O"
ring.
Inspection of Converter
1. Check converter for leaks as follow s (fig. 7A -4B ):
a. Install T ool J-21369 and tighten.
b. A pp ly 80 psi air pressure to tool.
c. Submerge in water and check for leaks.
2. Check converter hub surfaces for signs o f scoring or
wear.
