REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL

11. R ock the plunger rod slow ly back and forth across

the button until the dial indicator reads the greatest

deflection. A t this point, set the dial indicator to zero. T ools

will now be positioned as show n in figure 20B.

It is im portant to use a dial indicator correctly when

determ ining pinion depth requirements. Be sure to record

the num ber indicated by the indicator needle; do not record

the am ount o f travel o f the needle.

A fter "zeroing" the dial indicator on the highest point

o f deflection on the gauge plate, the indicator probe is swung

o ff the gauge plate, allow ing the needle to m ove. The

num ber w hich the needle points toward is the correct shim

thickness required for a nom inal pinion. See figure 2 IB.

12. Repeat the rocking action o f the plunger several

tim es to verify the setting.

13. O nce the zero reading is obtained, swing the

plunger until it is rem oved from the gaging plate button.

T he dial indicator w ill now read the required pinion

shim thickness for a "nominal" pinion. R ecord this figure.

14. Check the rear face o f the drive pinion being

installed for a pinion cod e number. T his number indicates

the necessary alteration o f the pinion shim thickness as

determ ined in step 13.

a. If the pinion is stam ped with a plus ( + ) number,

add

that m any thousandths to the indicator reading. For

exam ple, if indicator reading is .019, and pinion is marked

( + 2), the correct depth shim for installation will be .019

-f .002 = .021 inch.

b. I f the pinion has no plus ( + ) or minus ( -), use the

indicator reading as the correct shim thickness.

c. I f the pinion is stam ped w ith a minus ( - ) number,

s u b tra c t

that m any thousandths from the indicator

reading. For exam ple, if the indicator reading is .031, and

pinion is marked (-3 ), the correct depth shim for installation

will be .031 - .003 = .028 inch.

15. R em ove bearing caps and depth gaging tools from

carrier.

16. Position the shim selected in step 14 on the pinion

shaft against pinion head.

17. Lubricate the rear pinion bearing with liberal

am ounts o f hypoid lubricant and install rear bearing. U se

J-8609-01 for the 8-1/2" ring gear or J-5590 for the 8-7/8"

ring gear, as shown in figure 22B.
