PUMP  COVER  TO  DIRECT  CLUTCH 
NEEDLE  BEARING

B e a r i n g

a.  Install  torrington  bearing,  (fig.  7A -108B )  oil  pum p

 

gasket  and  using  guide  studs  from  J-3387  set  install  oil

 

pump.  Install  tw o  pump  to  case  bolts.

b.  M ove transm ission  so that output  shaft points down.

 

M ount a dial indicator so that plunger o f  indicator is resting

 

on  end  o f  the  input  shaft.  J-5492  m ay  be  used  to  support

 

the  dial  indicator  as  shown  in  Figure  7A -109B .  Zero  the

 

indicator.

c.  Push  up  on  the  transm ission  output  shaft  and

 

observe  the  total  indicator  m ovem ent.

d.  T he  indicator  should  read  .010"  to  .044".  If  the

 

reading  is  w ithin  lim its,  the  proper  selective  fit  w asher  is

 

being  used.  I f  the  reading  is  not  w ithin  lim its,  it  w ill  be

 

necessary  to  rem ove  the  pump  and  change  to  a  thicker  or

 

thinner  selective fit  thrust  washer,  as  required  to  obtain  the

 

specified  clearance.  Repeat  the  above  checking  procedure.

Selective  fit  thrust  washers  are  available  in  thicknesses

 

o f  .066",  .083"  and  .100".

25.  Install  new  pump  assem bly  in  case  gasket.

26.  Install  new  pum p  assem bly  to  case  square  cut  oil

 

seal  ring.

27.  Install  guide  pins  into  case.

28.  Install  pum p  assembly  into  case.  Install  attaching

 

bolts  w ith  new  washer  type  seals.

If  the  input  shaft  can  not  be  rotated  as  the  pum p  is

 

being  pulled  into  place,  the  direct  and  forward  clutch

 

housings have not been properly installed to index the faced

 

plates  with  their  respective  parts.  T h is  condition  m ust  be

 

corrected  before  the  pum p  is  pulled  in to  place.

Speedometer  Drive  Gear and  Extension

1.  Place speedom eter drive gear retaining clip into  hole

 

in  output  shaft.

2.  H eat a new  speedom eter drive gear using a heat lam p

 

or  suitable  heat  m ethod.

3.  A lign  slot  in  speedom eter  drive  gear  with  retaining

 

clip  and  install.

4.  Install extension  housing to case square cut  "O"  ring

seal.

5.  A ttach   extension  housing  to  case  using  attaching

 

bolts.  Torque  to  25  ft.  lbs.

6.  If  necessary,  install  a  new  extension  housing  seal,

 

using  seal  installer  J-5154  or  J-21426  (fig.  7A -110B ).

Manual  Linkage

1.  If  necessary,  install  a  new  m anual  shaft  to  case  lip

 

seal  using  3 /4"   diam eter  rod,  seat  seal  in  case.

2.  Install parking pawl,  tooth toward  the inside o f  case,

 

into  case.

3.  Install  parking  pawl  shaft  in to  case  and  through

 

parking  pawl.

4.  Install  parking  pawl  shaft  retainer  plug.  D rive  into

 

case  using  a  3 /8"   dia.  rod,  until  retainer  plug  is  .130"  to

 

.170"  below   face  o f case,  then  stake  in  three  places.
