1. Remove side cover attaching bolts and side cover
assembly.
2. R em ove drive gear bearing retainer and gasket.
3. R em ove drive gear bearing-to-gear stem snap ring,
then rem ove clutch gear bearing by pulling outward on
clutch gear until a screwdriver or other suitable tool can be
inserted betw een bearing large snap ring and case to
com plete rem oval (Fig. 7B -2A ). T h e clutch gear bearing is
a slip fit on the gear and in to the case bore. (This provides
clearance for removal o f clutch gear and m ainshaft
assem bly.)
4. R em ove speedom eter driven gear from extension.
5. R em ove extension to case attaching bolts.
6. R em ove the reverse idler shaft "E" ring (Fig. 7B-
3A ).
7. R em ove drive gear, m ainsahft and extension
assem bly together through the rear case opening. R em ove
drive gear, needle bearings and synchronizer ring from
m ainshaft assembly.
8. U sin g snap ring pliers, expand the snap ring in the
extension w hich retains the m ainshaft rear bearing (Fig. 7B-
4A ) and rem ove the extension.
9. U sin g J-22246 at the front o f the countershaft, drive
the shaft and its w oodruff key out the rear o f the case (Fig.
7B -5A ). T ool J-22246 w ill now hold the roller bearings in
p osition within the countergear bore. R em ove the gear,
bearings and thrust washers.
10. U se a long drift or punch through the front bearing
case bore and drive the reverse idler shaft and w ood ru ff key
through the rear o f the case (Fig. 7B -6A ).

1. U sin g snap ring pliers, rem ove the 2nd and 3rd speed
sliding clutch hub snap ring from m ainshaft and rem ove
clutch assem bly, second speed blocker ring and second
speed gear from front o f m ainshaft. See Fig. 7B -7A .
2. D epress speedom eter retaining clip and slide or tap
gear from m ainshaft.
3. R em ove rear bearing snap ring from m ainshaft
groove. See Fig. 7B -8A .
4. Support reverse gear w ith press plates and press on
rear o f m ainshaft to rem ove reverse gear, thrust washer,
spring washer, rear bearing, and snap ring from rear o f
m ainshaft. See Fig. 7B -9A .
5. R em ove the 1st and Reverse sliding clutch hub snap
ring from the m ainshaft and rem ove the clutch assem bly,
1st speed blocker ring and first speed gear from rear o f the
m ainshaft.
U nd er certain tolerance conditions, it m ay be necessary
to press the synchronizer hub and gear from the m ainshaft.
C L E A N IN G A N D IN S P E C T IO N
Transmission Case
1. W ash the transm ission thoroughly inside and outside
w ith cleaning solvent, then inspect the case for cracks.
2. C heck the front and rear faces for burrs, and if
present, dress them o ff w ith a fine m ill file.
