For all practical purposes, all vehicles m ake use o f the
sam e air conditioning 4 and 6-cylinder com pressors. A ctual
differences between com pressors are found in their
m ounting brackets, pulleys, connector assem blies and
com pressor capacitires, none o f w hich w ill affect the
follow in g Overhaul Procedures.
W hen servicing the com pressor, it is essential that steps
be taken to prevent dirt or foreign material from getting on
or into the com pressor parts and system during disassem bly
or reassem bly o f the com pressor. C L E A N TO O LS A N D
C L E A N W O R K A R E A A R E V E R Y IM P O R T A N T FO R
P R O P E R SE R V IC E . The com pressor connection areas and
exterior o f the com pressor should be cleaned off as m uch
as possible prior to any "on car" repairs or removal o f the
com pressor for w orkbench service. The parts must be kept
clean at all tim es and any parts to be reassembled should
be cleaned w ith naphtha, Stoddard solvent,
kerosene or equivlent solvent and dried o ff with
dry
air.
W hen necessary to use a cloth on any part, it should be o f
a non-lint producing type.
A lth ou gh certain service operations can be performed
w ithout com p letely rem oving the com pressor from the
vehicle, the operations described herein are based on bench
over-haul w ith the com pressor rem oved from the vehicle.
