Systems"). T h e sam e h olds ture for any disassem bly o f the
internal A -6 com pressor cylinder and shaft assembly.
If the A -6 C om pressor Internal Cylinder and Shaft
A ssem bly is to be serviced or replaced, then the oil in the
com pressor m ust be drained, m easured and replaced
according to "C.C.O.T. Refrigerant O il Distribution" in the
A ir C onditioning section to determ ine addition o f proper oil
quantity to new assembly.
A clean workbench, preferably covered with a sheet o f
clean paper, orderliness in the work area and a place for all
parts being rem oved and replaced is o f great im portance, as
is the use o f the proper, clean service tools. A n y attem pt to
use m ake-shift or inadequate equipm ent m ay result in
dam age a n d /o r im proper com pressor operation.
T h ese procedures are based on the use o f the proper
service tools and the condition that an adequate stock o f
service parts is available. A ll parts required for servicing the
internal com pressor are protected by a preservation process
and packaged in a m anner w hich w ill elim inate the necessity
o f cleaning, w ashing or flushing o f the parts. The parts can
be used in the internal assem bly just as they are rem oved
from the service package.
Piston shoe discs and shaft thrust races w ill be
identified by "number" on the parts them selves for reference
to determ ine their size and dim ension (see Figure ID -38).
A-6 COMPRESSOR SHAFT SEAL
SEAL LEAK DETECTION
A shaft seal should not be changed because o f an oil-
line on the hood insulator. T he Seal is designed to seep som e
oil for lubrication purposes. O nly change a Shaft Seal when
a leak is detected by evidence o f oil sprayed in large am ounts
and then only after actual refrigerant leakage is determ ined
by test.
Should an A -6 com pressor shaft seal ever have to be
replaced because it was determ ined to be the cause o f
excessive signs o f oil leakage in the A /C system , then the
oil in the A -6 com pressor m ust be drained, measured and
replaced
according
to
"C.C.O.T.
Refrigerant
Oil
Distribution" in the A ir C onditioning section to determ ine
oil loss. T he accum ulator in this A -6 system m ust then also
be rem oved - oil drained - m easured, etc. according to sam e
section.

surrounding the shaft, the exposed portion o f the seal seat
and the shaft itself.
This is absolutely necessary to
prevent any dirt or foreign material from getting into
