NOTICE: 

D o   not  over  stress  snap  ring,  dam age  may

 

occur.

17.  Install  input  gear  front  thrust  washer.

18.  Install  needle  bearing  to  forward  clutch  assembly.

19.  Install  direct  clutch  assembly,  to  forward  clutch

 

assembly.

20.  Install  direct  and  forward  clutch  assem blies  into

case.

M ake  certain  the  tangs  on  direct  clutch  housing  are

 

installed  into  slots  in  the  sun  gear  drive  shell.

21.  Install  cushion  spring  into  interm ediate  servo  bore

 

and  retain  with  petrolatum ,  install  interm ediate  servo.  (Be

 

sure  washer  is  in  place  on  servo  rod).

22.  Install  interm ediate band.  M ake sure band  ends  are

 

properly  located  on  adjusting  screw  and  servo  rod  ends.

 

Turn  adjusting  screw  into  case  until  end  o f screw  is  against

 

band  lug.  A lign  slotted  band  end  on  notched  end  o f  servo

 

rod.

23.  C heck  for  proper  thickness  o f  selective  fit  shim

 

between  oil  pum p cover and  direct clutch  assembly,  proceed

 

as  follows:

a.  Install  original  num ber  o f  shim s  found  during

 

disassem bly,  oil  pump  gasket  and  using  guide  studs  from

 

J-3387  set,  install  oil  pump.  Install  tw o  pum p  to  case  bolts.

b.  Install  dial  indicator  as  shown  in  Figure  7A 5-80B .

 

Zero  indicator.

c.  Lift  up  on  transmission  output  shaft  and  observe

 

total  indicator  m ovement.

d.  Indicator  should  read  0.010  to  0.044  in.  If end  play

 

is  within  the  specified  lim its  install  pump.  I f  the  end  play

 

is  not  w ithin  the  specified  lim its  add  or  rem ove  shim s  to

 

correct  this  condition.

NOTICE: 

D o   not  use  more  than  tw o  (2)  shim s.  If

incorrect  end  play  can  not  be  corrected  with  tw o  (2)
shims,  excessive  wear  or  unproper  oil  pump  assem bly

is  indicated.

25.  Install  new  pump  assembly  square  cut  oil  seal  ring.

26.  Install  guide  pins  into  case.

27.  Install  pum p  assembly  into  case.  Install  attaching

 

bolts  with  washer  seals.

NOTICE: 

If input  shaft  cannot  be  rotated  as  the  pump

 

is  being  pulled  into  place,  direct  and  forward  clutch

 

housings have not been properly installed to index faced

 

plates  with  their  respective  parts.  This  condition  m ust

 

be  corrected  before  pum p  is  pulled  into  place.

28.  A fter pum p  assem bly  is  com pletely  installed,  adjust

 

interm ediate  band.  Tighten  adjusting  screw  to  30  in.  lb.  33

 

N *m )  and  then  back -off  3  com plete  turns.  W hile  holding

 

screw  in  position,  tighten  locknut  to  15  ft.  lb.
