Inspection of Reaction Carrier, Roller Clutch,
and Output Carrier Assembly
1. I f the reaction carrier has a spacer ring in an
undercut at the bottom o f the roller cam ramps, inspect it
for dam age (Fig. 7A -127C ).
T h e reaction carrier w ith the undercut and spacer ring
is used optionally and interchangeably w ith the reaction
carrier w hich does not have an undercut and spacer ring.
2. Inspect band surface on reaction carrier for signs o f
burning or scoring.
3. Inspect roller clutch outer race for scoring or wear.
4. Inspect thrust washer surfaces for signs o f scoring
or wear.
5. Inspect bushing for dam age. If bushing is dam aged,
reaction carrier m ust be replaced.
6. Inspect reaction carrier pinions for dam age, rough
bearings, or excessive tilt.
7. C heck pinion end play. Pinion end play should be
.009"-.024" (Fig. 7A -128C ).
8. Inspect roller clutch for damaged rollers.
9. Inspect roller clutch cage and springs for damage.
10. Inspect front internal gear (output carrier) for
dam aged teeth.
11. Inspect output carrier pinions for damage, rough
bearings or excessive tilt.
12. C heck pinion end play. Pinion end play should be
.009"-.024" (Fig. 7A -129C ).
13. Inspect parking pawl lugs for cracks or damage.
14. Inspect output locating splines for damage.
15. Inspect front internal gear ring for flaking (Fig.
7A -49C ).
Pinion Replacement Procedure
1. Support carrier assem bly on its front face.
2. U sin g a 1 /2 inch diam eter drill, rem ove stake marks
from the end o f the pinion pin, or pins, to be replaced. This
w ill reduce the probability o f cracking the carrier w hen
pinion pins are pressed out. D o n ot allow drill to rem ove
any stock from the carrier.
3. U sin g a tapered punch, drive or press pinion pins out
o f carrier (Fig. 7A -130C ).
4. R em ove pinions, thrust w ashers and roller needle
bearing.
5. Inspect pinion p ocket thrust faces for burrs and
rem ove if present.
6. Install eighteen (18) needle bearings into each pinion
