REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL

G ENERAL D E S C R IP T IO N

This D ana Spicer axle is sim ilar in design to other

Salisbury type axles w ith the follow ing exceptions:

T he differential side bearing shim s are located

between the side bearing cone and roller assem bly and the

differential case. See figure 14F. These bearings are o f the

tapered roller design and are preloaded. In order to rem ove

the differential case the carrier m ust be spread.

Rem oval

1. Place vehicle on hoist w ith rear axle hanging free.

2. R em ove wheel and tire assemblies.

3. The axle shafts are full-floating type w ith flanged

outer end o f shaft attached to wheel hub by studs and nuts.

W heel is supported by tapered roller bearings at outer end

o f axle housing.

a. R em ove axle shaft to hub attaching nuts.

b. R ap on axle shaft to loosen shaft from hub and

rem ove shafts.

The pinion assembly incorporates an inner and outer

bearing shim. T he inner shim is used to maintain proper

pinion depth. The outer shim is used to m aintain proper

preload on the pinion bearing.

4. R em ove plug in carrier and drain lubricant.

5. R em ove cap screw s and lock w ashers attaching cover

to carrier. R em ove cover and gasket.

6. M ark one side o f carrier and m atching cap for

reassem bly. R em ove cap screws attaching bearing caps to

carrier.

7. U sin g spreader T ool J-24385 and dial indicator as

show n in figure 15F, spread carrier a m axim um o f .020".
