14. Back off the inner retaining ring on the steering tube ( Photo ST-9 ) enough to move the
shaft forward, disconnecting it from the pin at the back of the steering column. Slip
the shaft from the column.
15. Remove the step spacer from the steering tube.

The step spacer is counter-bored one side and machined flat on the other. The counter-
bored side faces towards the oilite bushing installed in the steering wheel housing when it
is reinstalled to the steering tube.

Vehicles manufactured from serial numbers S/N0110072 have 2 flat washers and 1 “O”
ring as opposed to the 3 flat washers in earlier models

On vehicles manufactured prior to S/N 0301191:
13. Remove the outside retaining ring on the steering tube at the steering column, and slip
off the 3 flat washers that are installed against the oilite bushing.. Photo ST-8
12. Remove the steering wheel cover to access the locknut that fastens the steering wheel to
the threaded end of steering tube. Photo ST-7 Slip the steering wheel off the shaft.
8. Loosen the brake line fitting at the master
cylinder a few turns. Do not completely
free it from the master cylinder.

ST-4 At the time of production, the
brake line is attached first to the master
cylinder, then bent and formed to the
upper frame assemblies. This tends to
create tension on the brake line into the
master cylinder that can only be released
by removing the 4 fasteners securing
the steering assembly to the bent front
floor plate. Once the assembly has been
unfastened, the brake line fitting should
thread out by hand.
