Servicing Mechanical Brake Calipers ( Parking Brake)

Inspect the parking/emergency brake system periodically to

ensure proper performance.

Service either by cable/caliper adjustment or brake pad replacement

The mechanical brake caliper assembly or pads need adjustment or servicing when:

A drag on vehicle power and acceleration occurs.

•

The vehicle does not move when placed in gear.

•

The brake adjustment nuts are tightened all the way, but the parking brake cannot be

•

firmly engaged using the parking brake lever.

The total clearance between the brake pads and brake disc exceeds .010”.

•

The total clearance between the brake pads and brake disc has become exceedingly

•

tight.

The pads are worn to 3mm (1/8”) thickness.

•

Brake efficiency is affected by contamination of lubricants and excessive heat to brake

•

discs.

Broken or cracked calipers

•

Brake Caliper Removal ( Mechanical Emergency Brake)

1. Remove the engine hood assembly

2. Release the emergency brake lever in the drivers compartment. ( Disengaged)

3. Disconnect the emergency brake cable at the

mechanical

caliper by removing the cot

ter pin that secures the clevis pin to the brake cam.

4. Remove the 2 bolts and lock washers securing the mechanical brake caliper bracket

assembly to the transmission.

5. Remove the 3 locknuts holding the mechanical calipers together and remove the cam.

6. Slide the outside half of the caliper off and remove the compression spring from the

longest of the mounting bolts.

3. Pump the brake pedal a few times to build up the proper pressure and to locate the pads

in the caliper assembly. This is also a good time to check for any leaky connections

at the caliper banjo bolts or “O” rings.

4. Reinstall the engine cover.
