Emergency handling4-5 

If engine flames out during 
driving 

If engine flames out during running. 

1. Reduce the car speed slowly and 
keep driving along a straight line. 
Drive the vehicle off the road carefully 
to a safe place. 

2. Turn on emergency flashers. 

3. Try to start the engine again, and if 
the engine fails to start, refer to ‗If 
v

ehicle fails to start‘. 

FRIENDLY TIPS

 

If engine does not run, then power 
assisting device of brake and steering 
gear will not work, therefore, steering 
and braking is more difficult than 
usual. 

 

If vehicle overheats

 

If thermometer of engine coolant 
indicates overheating, or power 
loss is found, or a loud knocking or 
banging noise is heard, then it 
shows possible engine 
overheating, and handle as per the 
following procedures... 

1. Drive the vehicle off road safely, 
then park the vehicle and turn on 
emergency light. Set transmission to 
neutral position and engage gear shift 
handle. If air conditioner is in use, turn 
it off. 

2. If coolant or steam spurts out from 
radiator or auxiliary radiator, then shut 
off engine. Open engine hood after 
steam gradually vanishes, if no 
coolant or steam spurts out, maintain 
the engine in running state and 
confirm that cooling fan is working. If 
not, turn off START button. 

 

 

 

FRIENDLY TIPS

 

 

To avoid personal injury, keep 
engine hood closed until there is 
no steam. 

 

Outflow of steam or coolant 
means high pressure. 

 
3. Check whether there is obvious 
coolant leakage under radiator, hose 
and vehicle. However, if water drops 
from air conditioner which is being 
used, it is normal. 

FRIENDLY TIPS

 

When engine is running, keep a 
certain distance between hands, 
clothes and running fan, engine 
transmission belt. 

 
4. If coolant leaks, shut off engine 
immediately. Inform BYD authorized 
service station of this situation for 
help. 

5. If there is no obvious leakage, then 
check auxiliary radiator of coolant. If it 
dries up, then add coolant into 
auxiliary radiator to between two 
scale marks while engine is running.
