7.22 Visual Approach
Whenever a visual approach and landing is to be initiated or accepted the pilotmust have the
required visual meteorological conditions prior to descendingbelow the MSA such that a visual
circuit may be flown at all times with the airportrunway in full unobstructed view of the (PF).
The visual approach must be backed up by all relevant navigational aids relativeto any
associated instrument approach if applicable. All minimum instrumentapproach altitudes must
be respected.
An altitude of 1,000 feet above aerodrome elevation is used for the downwind leg. On selection
of flaps 18 (or 42), the landing checklist shall be completed.
Tocompensate for gusts, pilotsshall add half the wind gust speed to the planned V
REF
whichshall
not exceed 15 KIAS. Any adjustment to the glidepath should be made as earlyas possible to
avoid high rates of descent close to the ground.
FOR ALL CROSSWIND LANDINGS, MAXIMUM AIRSPEED IS 135 KIAS.
For crosswind landings with gusts above 20 kts,
Apply the following additional procedures, adjust landing approach speed and VREF 18:
•
Add one half of reported steady headwind component plus full gust increment above
steady wind to normal landing approach speed and VREF 18 speed.
•
At decision height keep flaps 18°.
WARNING
DO NOT USE FLAP 42 WITH GUSTS ABOVE 20 KTS.
