If visual reference is lost while circling to land from IMC approach, PF issues command “GO
AROUND“ and the missed approach specified for that particular instrument procedure must be
followed. It is expected that the pilot will make an initial climbingturn toward the landing
runway and over the aerodrome where he will establish the aircraft climbing on the missed
instrument approach track.
In as much as the circling maneuver may be accomplished in more then one direction,
different patterns will be required to establish the aircraft on the prescribed missed
instrument approach course depending on its position at the time visual reference is lost.
7.21.1 AP/ FD use On a Circling Approach
Ensure MDA is set on the AMS and ALT is armed. Crew share carefully monitor that the AP
captures the desired altitude and once the altitude is captured, the PFD will display ALT HOLD.
Once within thecircling area,PF shall use HDG modeto maneuver within the circling area.
NOTE
Use the RWY waypoint on the FPL (if available), it will provide distance fromthreshold.
Example: Using Cat A minimums, do not start the turn to downwind until theRWY waypoint shows
1.68 miles or less.
7.21.2 Altitude Selector Use On a Circling Approach
Altitude selections should be made in accordance with the procedures laidout for the
CANPA
approach procedure.
7.21.3 Obstruction Clearance for a Circling Approach
For circling approaches, maximum airplane speeds are shown on theapproach plate instead of
airplane approach categories. Circling approachminimums for both FAA and ICAO criteria are
based on obstruction clearancefor approach maneuvering within a defined region of airspace.
This region ofairspace is determined by maximum KIAS. This region gets larger with higherspeed,
which may result in higher approach minimums depending on theterrain characteristics
surrounding the airport.Similarly, lower KIAS may result in a lower approach minimum.

CIRCLE-TO-LAND
title.
