Chapter 9 Security
E-shredding
E-shredding
Introduction
The Océ Smart Imager can hold data from the jobs on the hard disk after the jobs
have been deleted. When the jobs are deleted, traces of the data are still available on
the hard disk. With specialised tooling someone could recover the data after the job
was deleted.
E-shredding is a security feature. The feature enables you to permanently remove all
traces of deleted jobs. E-shredding is based on several subsequent overwrite passes
(runs). In each overwrite pass the system overwrites the data left on the hard disk.
This action makes the data non-retrievable.
You can define the number of overwrite passes ('Custom'), or select 'US DOD
5220.22m, 8-306.d' (by default 3 passes) or 'Gutmann' (by default 35 passes).
E-shredding may have an impact on the performance and the start-up time of the Océ
VarioPrint
®
2100/2110. When the performance is not according to your
requirements, decrease the number of overwrite passes and start all overwrite passes
immediately after deleting the jobs.
Viruses and worms cannot access the job data after the first overwrite pass.
E-shredding and security
Remember the following to guarantee a high security. When the security level is
'High', then the following is applicable.
■
E-shredding is always enabled.
■
You can only select 3 or more overwrite passes.
■
The system overwrites all the jobs.
Note:
You must have a valid licence to use 'E-shredding'. If you do not have a
licence, you cannot enable 'E-shredding', even when the 'High' check box for the
security level is checked.
