112 Configuring your Norstar KSU

Configuration tips
We recommend that you do not mix different line types in the same pool. For example, do not put
loop start lines that terminate on the VoIP Gateway and BRI lines in the same pool.
You can configure a VoIP Gateway to reach multiple IP destinations based on the digits dialed. If
multiple destinations are configured, you must ensure the numbering plan is consistent between
destinations.
Configuring the Norstar system
There are two ways to configure the Norstar dialing plan for use with the VoIP Gateway:
•
Lines are shared between many users.
This is like the Norstar PBX template where, outgoing calls are initiated through a line pool
and incoming calls terminate on target lines on the respective Norstar sets.
•
Lines are dedicated to specific users.
This is similar to the Norstar square template. In this configuration, users have dedicated
physical lines configured on their sets and the receive or make calls using those lines.
Shared line settings
If the lines are shared between many users, configure the following settings on the VoIP Gateway.
•
On the Channels - Hunt Group screen, enter the same phone number for all channels. Enter
each channel specifically, do not use ranges to specify more than one channel (for example, do
enter 1-4 in the Channels box). The number you enter should be a common number that can be
reached by anyone. If all calls over the VoIP Gateway are strictly private network calls, then
the number could be the main number for the node (for example, 758-0000). If calls over the
VoIP Gateway have the potential to go to the PSTN, then the number needs to be the main
PSTN number for that location (for example, 4037692211).
•
On the Channels - Hunt Group screen, enter the same Hunt Group ID for all of the channels.
•
On the Caller ID screen, enter the same name for all of the channels. Since the lines are shared,
a generic name of the originating location should be used (for example, Nortel Networks
Calgary).
•
On the IP to Hunt Group Routing Table screen, allow all numbers (*) to go to the Hunt Group
assigned to the channels.
If you want to improve security by not allowing wrong numbers to terminate at this location,
you can configure the VoIP Gateway so that both IP address and destination numbers must
match before a call is accepted. To use this configuration, you will need to identify all the
possible number ranges that are allowed to terminate at this location. Exactly what these
numbers are depends on what types of calls are sent to the VoIP Gateways over IP.
Figure 23
shows an example of this configuration.
