Using the BayStack 660 Wireless LAN Access Point
Glossary-2
203939-B
ESA
Extended Service Area. The wireless coverage within an area covered by devices with
the same SSID. The extended service area consists of the combined basic service area
of each BayStack 660 Access Point. A user with a mobile unit can roam within the
extended service area and maintain an uninterrupted connection to the LAN.
FHSS
Frequency hopping spread spectrum.
hop sequence
The pre-set order in which frequency hopping radio transmissions from a BayStack PC
card are distributed over 78 channels of the assigned transmission band. All stations
communicating with the same BayStack access point use the same hop sequence and
synchronize their hop timing. When interference is present, it only affects a few hops.
Hop sequences are designed so that successive hops are usually several megahertz
apart.
IEEE address
A unique hardware address assigned through the IEEE to each and every device that
can be attached to an Ethernet network. This address consists of six hexadecimal
numbers, sometimes separated by spaces or dashes, for example, 00-34-2C-1D-69-F1.
It is sometimes referred to as the hardware, network, or Ethernet address or MAC
address.
IEEE 802.11 standard
A standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers that defines
the requirements for implementation of wireless LANs.
infrastructure network
A network consisting of two or more BayStack workstations and one or more BayStack
660 Access Points. The wireless connection is through an access point that is wired into
the existing cabled network. An infrastructure network requires peer-to-peer network
software such as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT or a server-based network
such as Novell NetWare.
See also ad hoc network, peer-to-peer network, server-based
network, and infrastructure network.
IP
Internet Protocol.
MAC layer
The Media Access Control (MAC) layer or data link layer of the OSI reference model is
the interface to higher software levels. The MAC layer provides an asynchronous data
delivery service that is equivalent to the service provided by Ethernet. It is a best effort
datagram delivery service with low delay that supports typical LAN applications such as
file access, client/server applications, printing, and e-mail.
mobile unit
A laptop computer with a BayStack 660 PC Card and network software installed.
NDIS
The Microsoft Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) defines a
hardware-independent MAC layer network device driver. The BayStack NDIS driver
conforms to version 3 of this specification.
network driver
The software that makes it possible for a network adapter card such as the BayStack 660
PC Card to operate on a network.
network operating system
(NOS) The software that provides management of local area network operations and
services. Examples of network operating systems are Microsoft Windows NT and Novell
NetWare.
