Chapter 1
Introduction
This chapter provides instructions for using the BayStack 660 Access Point. This
device uses wireless LAN technology, implementing the IEEE 802.11 standard for
wireless LANs. The BayStack 660 Access Point communicates with a BayStack
660 PC Card (or another 802.11 direct-sequence, spread-spectrum PC card)
installed in a laptop computer to provide you with a connection to a wireless LAN.
Product Features
Features of the BayStack 660 Access Point include:
• A transmission range of up to 300 feet (91 meters) in a typical office
environment and up to 2000 feet (610 meters) in an open space environment
to enable connection to a wireless LAN.
Additional access points connected to the Ethernet LAN can extend the
service area (that is, the coverage area of a BayStack 660 Access Point).
Users can move from one service area to another and maintain a continuous
connection to the network. Network connections are suspended as the user
moves outside a service area and resume when the user again enters the
service area. Each access point can handle traffic for multiple users.
• Supports medium-user density, using up to three or more independent and
overlapping access points in an extended service area (ESA).
• Multiple layers of security, including access point locking, authentication, and
the IEEE 802.11 standard WEP (wired equivalent privacy) encryption option
for maximum integrity of data being sent over the air
• Java-based software for device management with SNMP support.
• Flash upgradeability.
• LED indicators that provide hardware and wireless LAN connection status.
