Port Role
The port role indicates the value of the port in the network:
Root
Primary Connection to the Root Bridge
Alternate
Alternate Connection back to Root Bridge
Designated
Connection to other bridges

Port State
A port may be in one of four states.
Disabled
Port administratively down, or physically Link Down.
Discarding
Port is blocking all traffic.
Learning
Port is learning, but not passing data.
Forwarding
Port is passing data.
