Setting PD Parameters
CAUTION: Because PD signals are at a very high frequency, PD cannot be properly evaluated through
distribution cables. Connect test leads directly to the asset’s terminals.
Ensure that all safety precautions are in place before conducting any test.
Finding the Noise Threshold in Manual Surge Mode
The PD Threshold and PD Event Limit will have default values set at the factory, but you will need to adjust the values
for every motor tested because the noise levels change based on the location of the test and the device being tested.
This change in noise levels requires adjustment to the PD Threshold so that it is 1–2 mV above the noise base line.
1. Select the asset you will be testing and ensure that it has the proper test configuration set as the active
configuration for your testing needs.
2. From Manual mode, open the Surge Test screen and confirm that the top line displays the asset and test
configuration needed then press or click on the Edit test configuration icon in the toolbar.
3. To start the process, set the PD Threshold to 1.0 mV and the PD Time Scale to 1.024 µs as shown in the preceding
Test Config Editor example. These values help you see the noise levels more easily for the first steps in the process.
Set the PD Event limit at 3, which is a good starting point for this part of the process.
4. Adjust other values if needed. Save your changes then press Exit to close the Test Config Editor and return to the
Surge Test screen.
5. Check the values in the lower right corner to confirm your starting settings then press and hold the Push-to-test
(PTT) button on the top left of the ADX front panel,
but do not ramp up the voltage
.
NOTE: The first part of the process does not ramp the voltage because you only need to determine the
system noise level. This is also why Manual mode is used at this time.
