Setting up References for Surge Testing
CAUTION: Ensure that the ADX test leads are properly connected to the asset being tested and that the
immediate area is clear of hazards. Ensure that all safety protocols are observed.
NOTE: Ensure that you are familiar with the processes for creating a new test configuration and new asset
before starting this procedure. Refer to chapter “5 — Defining Assets, Test Configurations, Installations,
and Routes” for descriptions of these processes.
References can be used when running Surge tests in Manual or Automatic mode. The process for setting
references is the same regardless of the mode used to run tests.
This section addresses creating references for 3-phase motors and single coils. The process for single-
phase motors is essentially the same, but use only leads 1 and 2.
Surge testing can include using test references and the Zero Start Override feature (if practical) to ensure that identical
assets conform to a benchmark set from a known-good asset.
1.
Use a known-good asset to run your tests as you set up the references.
2. Select an existing test configuration for the asset type that you will be testing, or create a new one. Define values
for all testing elements needed. Ensure that Surge test is enabled and the Leads that will be tested are also enabled.
Do not enable Zero Start Override at this time.
3. When you have completed your initial settings, give the test configuration a name that you can easily identify. (Best
practice is to follow your organization’s naming conventions while giving the configuration a name that reflects the
model or design specific to this Reference Test.)
4. Select an existing asset for the asset type you will be testing, or create a new one. Provide all values needed to
properly describe the asset. When building the asset, you must also select the test configuration created for the
intended testing application.
5. For this application, copying an existing asset and saving it with a new name is a common practice. (Best practice
here is to name the asset based on its model, along with the job, serial, or lot number.)
6. Ensure that your new asset is displayed in the top line of the screen along with the desired test configuration.
7. Connect the test leads to the asset as described in chapter 3, “Setting up the Megger Baker ADX Tester and
Accessories” for the type of asset you will be testing.
8. You can perform this process in Manual or Automatic mode. For this example, start in Automatic mode and open
the Surge Test screen.
NOTE: Automatic mode is often a more practical mode to use when setting up references for surge
testing. It is a more controlled method and ensures exact test voltages are achieved because the ADX
controls the ramping process more precisely using defined target voltages.
The process can also be performed using the Manual mode Coil Test screen.
