5-2 UNIX Printing Through TCP/IP
UNIX Printing Through TCP/IP
Overview
The following pages explain how to configure the Print Server and your
network for use with TCP/IP communication in various environments.
Independent setup and installation procedures are provided for Windows
systems and for most popular UNIX systems.
The Print Server TCP/IP capability will also operate with lpr spoolers on
other systems, and with spooler/supervisor capabilities that communicate
raw print jobs to the Print Server TCP/IP Port.
This port number defaults to 10001, but may be changed to any desired
number using the Network Management Utility.
You can use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for delivering IP
addresses to hosts through an IP network.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol for network
management services.
SNMP is supported for Management Information Base (MIB) II over IP for
the print servers. This support allows you to query MIB II to get system
information about the print server.
Installation in a Windows Environment
Several versions and variations of Microsoft Windows may be used on
NetWare and/or TCP/IP networks, as well as on native Microsoft Windows
network. This flexibility allows various options for setting up the network
printing system even though this Print Server does not support Netbeui.
• If the Windows workstations are connected to a NetWare network,
configure the printer interfaces for NetWare, and use standard Windows/
NetWare utilities to provide access to the printer.
• If NetWare is not to be used, the users may access the printer using TCP/
IP. This section describes installation under Windows for Workgroups,
Windows 95, and Windows NT.
