NEUTRAL SWITCH

The neutral switch is powered by the ECM through the 
neutral indicator lamp and grounds to the engine case. The 
switch is normally open. When the transmission is placed in 
neutral, the switch actuator rides up on the neutral switch 
cam, closes the switch, and illuminates the neutral indicator 
lamp.

ONBOARD TEST

1.

Turn the main switch to the On position and place the 

transmission in neutral.

2.

If the neutral lamp does not illuminate, disconnect the 

neutral switch wire and ground it to the engine or frame.

– If the neutral indicator lamp illuminates, remove and 

inspect the neutral switch 

(see NEUTRAL SWITCH 

INSPECTION page 18-20)

– If the neutral indicator lamp does not illuminate, inspect 

the instrument cluster wiring and the neutral indicator 
lamp bulb 

(see INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BULB

1.

Disconnect the wiring harness from the neutral switch.

2.

Remove the neutral switch and discard the seal washer.

INSPECTION

1.

Inspect the connector and switch. Clean as needed.

2.

Remove the neutral switch and test for continuity 

between the neutral switch terminal and the actuator. Press 
the actuator to close (continuity); release the actuator to open 
(no continuity).

3.

If the neutral switch is sound, inspect the neutral switch 

cam on the end of the shift drum 

(see TRANSMISSION 

INSPECTION page 11-7)
