INSTALLATION
Apply a thin film of wheel bearing grease to the steering stem
and slide it through the steering head. Start the retaining nut
and the lock nut on the steering stem.
Slowly tighten the retaining nut while rocking the fork in a
front-to-rear motion until any movement is just eliminated.
Notice
Correct adjustment is attained when the bearing play is
eliminated without preloading the bearings.
WARNING
Over-tightening the retaining nut (preloading the steering
head bearings) will cause tight steering, increased
bearing wear, reduced vehicle control resulting in
personal injury.
Hold the retaining nut and tighten the lock nut.
Tool: Retaining nut socket XXXX-XXX6
Torque: Steering stem lock nut
9.00 ft-lbs.
Check that the bearing play has been eliminated and the fork
turns freely from stop to stop. Re-adjust if necessary.

Position the top triple clamp over the fork and install the
washer and acorn nut.
Torque: Top triple clamp acorn nut
10.00 ft-lbs.
Install the fork studs.
Torque: Fork studs
11.00 ft-lbs.
1. FORK STUDS (2)
2. ACORN NUT 3. WASHER
4. TOP TRIPLE CLAMP
Install handlebar (see HANDLEBAR INSTALLATION page
13-4)
Install brake hose and retainers.
1. BRAKE HOSE RETAINERS
