3. LUBRICATION SYSTEM
6999-0003 7/15/99
3-1
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
The main components of the lubrication system are: oil pressure pump, pressure relief valve, dual chamber oil
scavenge pump, oil filter, crankcase reed valve, the scavenge area of the crankcase, and the oil sump. The system
also includes an oil pressure switch and low oil pressure indicator.
Access to the oil sump pickup requires splitting the engine cases
(see Chapter 8. CRANKCASE/CRANKSHAFT)
.
WARNING
• Wear eye protection when removing or installing retaining rings. Retain rings can slip and cause serious eye
injury. To Avoid injury when removing or installing retaining rings, always use the correct size and type retaining
ring pliers and be sure the tips are not worn or damaged.
• To avoid blowing debris into your eyes and face, wear eye and face protection when working with compressed
air.
OIL FLOW
Engine oil is stored in the oil sump area located below the transmission. Oil is drawn from the oil sump by the oil
pressure pump and delivered to the engine for lubrication and cooling. When the oil pressure reaches 50-70 psi.
the relief valve opens and excess oil is returned to the oil sump.
Oil under pressure flows from the outer shell of the oil filter through the filter media, and to the engine oil galleries
to feed the cylinder heads, cams, main bearings, rod bearings, and the transmission gears.
Pressurized oil lubricates the cam bearings, lifters and cam chains of both cylinders. The oil then drains through
the cam chain tunnel into the timing gear area of the crankcase where it is drawn into the outer scavenge pump.
The scavenge pump returns the oil to the oil sump.
Filtered oil is also delivered to the right main bearing, through the crankshaft, and to the connecting rod bearings.
After lubricating the main and rod bearings, the oil drains back into the crankcase scavenge area.
Oil also flows through the left side of the crankcase to supply oil to the left main bearing and starter sprag clutch. It
then travels through an orifice in the alternator bolt to a cooling jet, spraying oil onto the rotor and stator assembly.
This oil collects in the primary drive housing and lubricates the primary drive gears. The crankcase reed valve
produces a negative pressure condition in the crankcase to help pull the oil from the primary housing back to the
crankcase scavenge area. This oil is picked-up by the inner scavenge pump and pumped back to the oil sump.
Pressured oil is also supplied to the transmission gears and bearings. This oil also services the clutch bearings and
plates. The oil drains through the primary housing and into the crankcase scavenge area where it is pumped back
to the engine main oil sump.
