CHARGING SYSTEM TESTS

Notice

In order to obtain accurate test readings, the battery must 
be fully charged (see BATTERY CHARGING page 16-4).

REGULATED VOLTAGE

1.

Start the engine and warm it to operating temperature. 

When the engine is warm, move the main switch to the 

Off

 

position.

2.

Remove the battery cover strap and cover.

3.

Connect a voltmeter to the positive and negative battery 

terminals.

4.

Start the engine and allow it to idle, then gradually 

increase the engine speed to 3,000 rpm.

Standard:

14.0 - 14.8 V @ 3,000 rpm

If the regulated voltage is below standard, check the 
alternator output (see ALTERNATOR OUTPUT page 16-5).

ALTERNATOR OUTPUT

1.

Disconnect the wiring harness from the voltage regulator 

connector.

2.

Check the connector for corrosion or loose connections.

3.

Connect an AC voltmeter to any two of the three 

alternator wire terminals.

4.

Start the engine and run it at 3000 rpm while measuring 

the AC voltage.

5.

Move one of the voltmeter probes to the remaining 

alternator wire terminals and measure the AC voltage.

Standard:

 60 to 70 VAC

If the output voltage from any combination of alternator wire 
terminals is below standard, test the alternator stator (see 
ALTERNATOR STATOR page 16-6) and inspect the alternator 
rotor (see ALTERNATOR ROTOR INSPECTION page 16-8).

Notice

The output voltage should be checked after replacement 
of any charging system component other than the 
battery.
