Caution
• Never use a wire brush to remove carbon deposits
from the piston. Scratches or other marks on the piston
could score the cylinder bore resulting in engine
damage.
• Do not bead blast pistons to remove carbon deposits
from the piston. Bead blasting will round off the ring
lands of the piston. Oil contamination will occur
resulting in high oil consumption and exhaust blow-by.
INSPECTION
PISTONS
1. Inspect the pistons for excessive wear or damage. Look
for the following:
– Cracked, broken, or bent ring lands.
– Deep scratches or cracks in the piston skirts and teflon
patches.
– Evidence of piston dome-to-valve contact
– Etching or melting, burning and scoring
2. Inspect the edges of the piston domes for nicks or burrs.
Remove any defects with a light filing of the edge of the
piston dome and buff smooth with a steel wool pad.

3. Measure the piston outer diameter. Take measurements
at a 90° angle to the piston pin hole starting below the bottom
ring of the piston and completing measurement about
0.5 inches from the bottom of the piston skirt. Record the
smallest measurement.

4. Calculate the cylinder-to-piston clearance by subtracting
the piston outer diamter measurement from the cylinder bore
measurement
(see CYLINDER MEASUREMENT page 7-7) .
