DNS Configuration
This appendix provides additional details regarding the configuration of
network DNS facilities and the BV1250 DNS emulation capabilities. This
information is provided as an adjunct to the procedures described in
Sections 3.2.5, 3.2.6 and 5.9.1 of this document.
D.1 BV1250 DNS Functions
The function of a DNS system in an IVG network is to provide telephone
number to IP Address translations when an H.323 Gatekeeper is not used.
The BV1250 is able to use DNS information from two sources:
•
Internal DNS Database (limit of up to 511 units in the Network)
•
External DNS Servers (limit of up to 2048 units per server using a
maximum of 3 servers)
The BV1250 units Internal DNS Database file (DNS.DAT) is located in
the directory 3.1/VHUB/ETC within each unit. This information is
common to all units in the network and is used to set BV1250 network
“priority connections”. Since the internal DNS information resides
autonomously in each BV1250 unit, it is necessary to update every unit’s
DNS configuration file whenever the network configuration is changed.
It is possible to use this internal DNS capability to set up a network
independent of external DNS servers. This capability can also be used in
conjunction with external DNS servers. Because the look-up capabilities
of the BV1250 unit’s internal DNS functions are faster than that required
for external look-up, the external DNS function is required only when the
number of terminals in the network exceeds the 511.

Information stored in external DNS servers is available to all units in a
network. This means that only the DNS server configuration files need to
be updated when a network configuration change is made.
