Figure 3-3 on the preceding page shows a sample network in which a variety of
interconnections are illustrated. This sample is used throughout this manual to
illustrate network and unit configuration. Also see the IP addressing and
numbering plan network diagrams in appendices B and C.
The sample network is H.323 compliant and uses BV1250 H.323 Gateways. A
Gatekeeper device is used to manage network IP address-to-telephone number
translations.
As discussed earlier, this same network can be configured with an external DNS
server, or can be configured using the BV1250’s internal DNS functions. These
variations are discussed later in this section and are elaborated in Appendix D:
In the sample network, the New York Main Office and the Chicago, Los Angeles,
and San Francisco branch offices are using BV1250 IVG units to realize low-cost
voice and fax communications through the IP Network.
The New York Main Office
New York is using BV1250-E&M IVGs (units 1, 2, 3, and 4) connected to
the E&M interfaces of two networked PBXs. These IVGs are grouped
(Trunk Groups) so that PBX A, which also has G3 fax terminals associated
with it, is configured to process communications for all of the IVGs in New
York. PBX B communicates with units 3 and 4 only.
New York is also the location at which the Gatekeeper device resides. This
device provides the entire network with IP address-to-telephone number
translation and other enhanced services (e.g. bandwidth management and
network security).
If an H.323 network Gatekeeper is not used, an external DNS server and/or
the BV1250’s internal DNS server functions must be used to provide IP
address-to-telephone number translation.
The Chicago Branch Office
Chicago is using a BV1250-AP/FXS IVG (Unit 5) connected to a Key
Telephone System. The office can place and receive calls from anywhere in
the IVG network.
The KTS lines have been configured into a Terminal Hunt Group. When an
incoming call encounters a busy port, this Hunt Group configuration causes
the IVG to seek out an available terminal.
The San Francisco Branch Office
The San Francisco branch office has two BV1250-FXO IVGs (units 6 and
7). FXO units are connected to the analog station ports of a PBX.
This configuration provides San Francisco with a virtual long distance link
with the New York, Chicago, and Lost Angeles offices. The connection
with the PBX serves all phones connected to the local PBX and allows calls
to be easily placed through the IP network to phones throughout the
organization.
