Appendix: Terminology
Term/ Abbreviation Significance
Development platform
Is the entire combination of programming and development tools as
well as the firmware of the control unit.
Ethernet
Physical protocol and network to connect different devices.
Incremental encoder
Encoder
Runtime system
Provides all necessary functions to execute a program.
Option modules
Option modules are to be inserted into the CPU modules. Option
modules for serial interfaces or different field bus couplings are avail-
able.
EtherCAT
Realtime Ethernet fieldbus according to IEC 61158
Term/ Abbreviation Significance
Terminating resistor
Resistor for minimizing signal reflections. Terminating resistors must
be installed or added at the line end of bus segments.
Modules
Modules, also referred to as peripheral modules, establish the con-
nection to the process. Modules can be plugged into CPU module on
the right side to expand the range of functions. Signal transmitters and
actuators are integrated for example via I/O modules.
Operation manual
Operation manuals are documents which provide the machine and
system project engineer with the necessary information to select suit-
able hardware. Furthermore, Operation manuals are also used to pro-
vide the service and initial setup personnel with information concern-
ing the design structure of the hardware components.
CPU module
Central module
CANOpen
A field bus protocol based on CAN which has been standardized as a
European standard.
Development platform
Is the entire combination of programming and development tools as
well as the firmware of the control unit.
EtherCAT
Realtime Ethernet fieldbus according to IEC 61158
Ethernet
Physical protocol and network to connect different devices.
Firmware
The basic software of a device necessary to load and operate an ap-
plication.
Incremental encoder
Encoder
Runtime system
Provides all necessary functions to execute a program.
Term/ Abbreviation Significance
Option modules
Option modules are to be inserted into the CPU modules. Option
modules for serial interfaces or different field bus couplings are avail-
able.
Retain data
Data that is written into the memory of the control system by the appli-
cation and permanently saved.
Retain data retain their value after turning the device off and on. The
stored data are used when the program is restarted (e.g. entered val-
ues of parameters).
This data will not be saved on the Compact Flash memory card.
State report
Files which a device can save for troubleshooting. Those contain im-
portant information about the status of the device at the time the error
occurred. They can be read for service purposes.
