4. C oat lips o f p in io n oil seal and seal surface o f
pin io n flange w ith hypoid lubricant.
5. Install a new p in io n b e a rin g spacer onto drive
pinion.
6. For Passenger Car, position companion flange onto drive
pinion, using J-9458 and companion flange Holding Tool
J-8614-11, as shown in figure 26B. Tool J-9458-1 is
threaded onto pinion shaft, and nut tightened against
J-9458-2 to pull flange onto shaft. Remove J-9458 after
flange is seated.
7.
For Truck models,
place drive p in io n into position,
an d m ount a suitable thick w ash er or sheet m etal
p late over the p in io n stem . Install the o rig in al

through the fro n t b e a rin g f a r en ough to leave
th read s exposed w hen the co m p a n io n flange is
placed into position. R em ove the w ash er an d install
the co m p an io n flange, using J-8 6 1 4 -1 1.
For all models,
tig h ten n u t u n til all end play is
rem oved from drive pin io n .
N O TE: W hen no fu rth e r end play is
detectable, and w hen H o ld er J-8614-11 will
no longer pivot freely as p in io n is ro tated ,
preload
specifications are being neared .
F u rth e r tig h te n in g should be done only a fte r
nut and w ash er in stallatio n an d p relo ad has
been checked.
9. W hile observing the p reced in g caution, carefully set
p reload d ra g at 20-25 inch p o u n d s on new bearings,
