Position  p in io n   gears  a n d   th ru st  w ashers  on  side 
gears.  Install  pinion  sh a ft  th ro u g h   case  and  gears.

Install  dial  indicator  in  case  so  th a t  contact  b u tto n  
rests  ag ain st  p inion  g e a r  as  show n  in  F ig u re  1 ID .

9. 

C om press  clutch  pack,  using  a  screw driver  as  shown 
in  F igure  11D.  M ove  the  p in io n   g e a r  to  o b ta in  

tooth  clearance.

10. 

T ooth  clearance  should  be  .001"  to  .008".  If 
req u ired ,  change  shim s  to  o b ta in   p ro p e r  tooth 
clearance.

Rem ove  side  gear  assem bly  an d   re p e a t  tooth 

clearance  procedure  fo r  o th e r  side  g e a r  on  opposite 
side  o f case.

12. 

Rem ove  p in io n   shaft,  gears  a n d   th ru st w ashers.

13. 

Install  re m ain in g   side  g ear,  clutch  pack  assem bly 
and  shim s  in  case.

14. 

Install  p in io n   gears  an d   th ru st  w ashers.  In stallatio n  

o f  p in io n   gears  can  be  p e rfo rm e d   by  reversing  the 

p inion  g ear  rem oval  pro ced u re.

For  all  except  Corvette 

assem ble  springs  in  spring 

reta in e r  and  clam p  assem bly  in  vise.  Install  " C "  

clam p  an d   b a r  stock  on  sp rin g   re ta in e r  th en   install 

a  1/4  inch  bolt  a n d   n u t  in  each  fro n t  spring.  See 
F igure  12D.

b ar  stock  a n d   " C "   clam p.

On  Corvette 

install  Tool  J-2 2 3 1 1  to  com press  clutch 

pack,  secure  pack  w ith  1 /4 "   bolts  as  shown  in 

F igure  13D.  P artially   install  pack  th en   rem ove  bolts 
and  com plete  pack  in stallatio n .  R em ove  tool.

D rive  spring  pack  into  side  gears  sufficiently  to 
retain   fro n t  springs,  th e n   rem ove  1/4  inch  bolts 
from   springs.  D rive  sp rin g   pack  into  position.  See 
F igure  14D.

19. 

Install  the  p in io n   sh a ft  an d   lock  screw  to  re ta in   side 

gears  until  axle  sh afts  are  installed.
