Fig.  9G—Backlash  and  Preload  A d ju s tm e n t

N O T E :  T his  m ethod  o f  ad ju stm e n t  provides 

for  p ro p e r  p reload  o f  bearings.

6. 

M ount  a  dial  in d icato r  on  the  c a rrie r  an d   check  the 
backlash  betw een  rin g   g e a r  and  p in io n   as  shown  in 
F ig u re  10G.  Backlash  should  be  from   .003"  to  .012" 
(.005"  to  .008"  p re fe rred ).

N O T E :  If  backlash  is  m ore  th a n   .012  inch, 
loosen  the  rig h t  h a n d   ad ju stin g   n u t  one  notch 
an d   tighten  left  h a n d   ad ju stin g   n u t  one 
notch.  If  backlash  is  less  th a n   .003  in.  loosen 
the  left  h an d   ad ju stin g   n u t  one  notch  and 
tig h ten   rig h t  h an d   n u t  one  notch.

7. 

T ighten  b earin g   cap  bolts  to  specifications.

8. 

Install  side  b earin g   ad ju stin g   n u t  locks  and  torque 
to  specifications.

Ring  Gear  Thrust  Pad  Adjustment

1. 

Inspect  bronze  tip  o f  th ru st  p a d   and  if   w o rn   install 
a  new  one.

2. 

Install  th ru st  p a d   and  tig h te n   screw  until  bronze  tip 

engages  back  face  o f rin g   g e a r w hile  ro ta tin g   gear.

3. 

Back  off  screw  o n e-tw elfth  (1 /1 2 )  tu rn   a n d   tighten 
locknut  to  specifications.  See  F ig u re  11G.

N O TE:  M ake  sure  screw  does  n o t  tu rn   d u rin g  
locking  process.  T his  ad ju stm e n t  provides 

.005  in.  to  .007  in.  clearan ce  betw een  th ru st 

pad   and  rin g   g e a r  face.

Installation

1. 

C lean  out  axle  housing  a n d   cover  an d   place  new 

gasket  over  axle  housing.

2. 

A ssem ble  differential  c a rrie r  to  axle  housing,  install 
lockw ashers  and  bolts  an d   tig h te n   securely.

3. 

Replace  axle  housing  in sp ectio n   cover,  if   rem oved, 

using  new  gasket.

4. 

A ssem ble  re a r  universal jo in t.

CAUTION: 

This propeller shaft  to pinion flange

 

fastener  is  an  important  attaching part  in  that

 

it  could  affect  the  performance  o f  vital

 

components  and systems,  and/or could result  in

 

major  repair  expense.  It  must  be  replaced  with

 

one  o f  the  same  part  number  or  with  an

 

equivalent  part  i f   replacement  becomes  neces­
sary.  Do  not  use  a  replacement  part  o f  lesser

 

quality or substitute design.  Torque  values  must

 

be  used as specified during reassembly  to  assure

 

proper retention  o f this part.

5. 

Install  axle  sh afts  as  o u tlin ed   in  applicable  axle 
in stallatio n   pro ced u re  in  Service  M anual.

6. 

Fill  axle  w ith  lu b rica n t  to  a  level  even  w ith  bottom  

o f  filler  hole.  See  Section  0  in  the  T ruck  Service 

M an u al  fo r  p ro p e r  lu b rican t.
