Disassembly of Case
1. M ark the case and cover halves w ith a scribe line
fo r reassem bly in the sam e position.
2. W ith ring g ear rem oved, se p a rate case and cover.
3. Rem ove the in tern a l p a rts and keep sep a rate d so
they m ay be installed in the sam e relative positions.
Inspection
1. Inspect the d iffe re n tia l g ea rs, p in io n s, th ru st
w ashers, spider and all m atin g surfaces for
evidence o f a b n o rm a l w ear.
2. C lean all parts th oroughly in suitable solvent.
3. R eplace parts as necessary.
Reassembly of Differential
1. L ubricate in tern al p arts w ith hypoid g e a r lubricant.
2. Place differential p in io n s an d th ru st w ashers onto
spider.
3. A ssem ble differential gears an d w ashers to case and
cover.
4. A ssem ble differential case a n d cover m aking sure
scribe m arks align.
5. Install ring gear and a tta c h in g bolts and lockwash-
ers, and torque altern a tely to specifications.
6. The differential m ay be in stalled into the c a rrie r at
this point, or m ay be in stalled a fte r servicing the
drive pinion.
Installation and Adjustment
1. Place b earin g cups over side b e arin g s and lift the
differential assem bly into the c arrie r. Install b earin g
caps, m aking sure m ark ed caps are installed in
o rig in al positions. Secure the cap bolts snugly.
2. Loosen the rig h t side ad ju stin g nut an d tig h ten the
left side nut, using J-24429 as shown in figure 3E,
until the ring g ear contacts the drive p in io n . D o not
force the gears into contact so as to b ind them . At
this point, zero lash is o b ta in e d .
3. Back off the left ad ju stin g n u t ap p ro x im ately two
slots. Install locking fingers in to holes a n d fasten
fingers to b e a rin g cap.
4. T ighten rig h t ad ju stin g n u t firm ly to force the case
into solid contact w ith the left ad ju stin g nut.
5. Loosen rig h t ad ju stin g n u t u n til it is free from its
bearing, then re tig h ten until it contacts the bearing.
6. T ighten rig h t ad ju stin g n u t ap p ro x im ately two slots
if used bearin g s are b eing installed, or three slots if
new b earin g s are being in stalled .
7. Install locking re ta in e r into holes and attach fingers
to b earin g cap.
8. T orque b earin g cap bolts to specification.
N O T E : At this p o in t the d ifferen tial bearin g s
are pro p erly p relo ad ed . If any ad d itio n al
adjustm ents are re q u ire d in the follow ing
procedures
m ake sure th a t the p relo ad
rem ain s as established. If one ad ju stin g n u t is
loosened the o th er n u t m ust be tig h ten ed
an
equal amount
to m a in ta in this preload.
9. M ount a dial in d icato r on the housing an d m easure
the backlash betw een the rin g g ear a n d pinion.
Backlash should be from .003" to .012" w ith .005"
to .008" p re fe rred . R efer to figure 6E.
N O TE: If backlash is m ore th a n .012" loosen
the rig h t ad ju stin g n u t one slot an d tig h ten
left adju stin g n u t one slot. If backlash is less
th an .003" loosen the left a d ju stin g n u t one
slot and tig h ten the rig h t a d ju stin g n u t one
slot.
