DRIVE PINION ASSEMBLY
Removal
1. Rem ove differential as previously outlined.
2. Check pinion b e arin g p re lo a d as described u n d er
"D riv e Pinion - R eassem b ly ". R ecord the result. If
th ere is no preload re a d in g , check fo r looseness o f
p in io n assem bly by sh ak in g the co m p an io n flange.

3. Rem ove the p in io n b e arin g re ta in e r bolts from the
housing as shown in figure 7E.
4. Rem ove the p inion and b e a rin g re ta in e r assem bly.
It m ay be necessary to ra p on the pilo t end o f the
p in io n to assist the assem bly fro m the carrier.
5. R ecord the thickness o f the shim s rem oved from
betw een the b earin g re ta in e r flange an d the c a rrie r
housing.
Disassembly
1. C lam p the pinion assem bly in vise.
2. Install H older J-8614-11 on flange by using two
bolts w ith flat w ashers, as show n in figure 8E.
Position J-8614-11 on flange so th a t the fo u r
notches are tow ard the flange.
3. Use a suitable sized socket to rem ove the p in io n nut
and w asher. D iscard the p in io n n u t and use a new
one upon reassem bly.
4. T h read end o f J-8614-3 into sm all O .D . end o f
J-8614-2. T hen w ith J-8614-11 installed as in step 2,
in sert J-8614-2 into J-8 6 1 4 -1 1 an d tu rn it 1/8 o f a
tu rn to locked position. R em ove flange by tu rn in g
J-8614-3 w hile holding J-8 6 1 4 -1 1 as show n in figure
9E.
5. S upport the b earin g r e ta in e r as show n in figure 10E
and press out the drive p in io n . D o n o t allow drive
p in io n to fall onto the floor.

6. S ep arate the p in io n flange, the oil seal, the fro n t
b earin g and the b e arin g re ta in e r. T he oil seal m ay
have to be d riv en from the b e a rin g re ta in e r if it is
being replaced.
7. D rive the p in io n fro n t an d re a r b e a rin g cups from
the b earin g reta in e r, using a d rift.
8. To rem ove the re a r b earin g , use J-22912 as shown
in figure 1 IE.
9. D rive the p in io n strad d le b e a rin g fro m the c arrier
housing, using a d rift as show n in figure 12E.
Inspection
1. C lean all parts in a su itab le solvent a n d dry w ith
air.
2. Inspect the drive p in io n fo r chipped, cracked or
excessively w orn teeth an d inspect the splines for
w ear.
3. Inspect the b earin g s for w o rn o r p itted rollers or
races. Inspect the p in io n flange splines fo r w ear.
