p lu n g er until it is rem oved fro m the g au g in g plate
button.
T he dial in d icato r will now re a d the re q u ired p in io n
shim thickness fo r a " n o m in a l" p in io n . R ecord this
figure.

Check the re a r face o f the drive p in io n being
installed fo r a p inion code n u m b er. T his n u m b e r
indicates the necessary a lte ra tio n o f the p in io n
shim thickness as d e te rm in e d in step 13.

Position the shim selected in step 14 on the p in io n

L ubricate the re a r p in io n b e a rin g w ith liberal
am ounts o f hypoid lu b ric a n t an d install re a r
bearing. U se J-6547 as show n in figure 23B for
passenger car m odels. U se J-5590 fo r truck m odels,
as shown in figure 24B.
Installation and Adjustment
1.
L ubricate the fro n t b earin g w ith lib e ra l am ounts o f
hypoid lu b rican t, an d place in to o u te r cup.
2.
For Passenger Car
place a new p in io n oil seal into
position in c a rrie r bore. T a p lightly w ith a
protective plate an d a h a m m e r until seal flange
seats ag ain st c a rrier, as show n in figure 25B.
3.
For Truck Models
po sitio n seal in bore an d place
gauge plate J-22804-2 over seal and ag ain st flange.
G au g e plate insures p ro p e r seating o f seal in
ca rrie r bore. See figure 26B. U se J-23911 to press
seal into bore until gauge p late is flush w ith the
J—21 777-45
