DRIVE PINION
Removal and Disassembly
1. Rem ove differential as previously o utlined.
2. Check p inion b earin g p relo ad as described u n d er
"D riv e P inion - In stallatio n and A d ju stm en t." If
there is no preload re a d in g , check fo r looseness o f
p in io n assem bly by sh ak in g the co m p an io n flange.
L ooseness in d ic a te s th e need fo r b e a rin g
replacem ent.
3. Install H older J-8 6 14-11 on flange by using two
bolts w ith flat w ashers, as shown in figure 5F.
Position J-8 6 14-11 on flange so th a t the four
notches are tow ard the flange.
4. Rem ove p in io n nut an d w asher. D iscard p in io n nut
and use a new one upon reassem bly.
5. T h read end o f J-8 6 14-3 into sm all O .D . end o f
J-8 6 14-2. T hen w ith J-8 6 14-11 installed as in step 3,
insert J-8 6 14-2 into J-8 6 14-11 and tu rn it 1/8 o f a
turn to locked position. R em ove flange by tu rn in g
J-8 6 14-3 w hile holding J-8 6 14-11 as show n in figure
6F.
6. Rem ove drive p in io n fro m c a rrier. It m ay be
necessary to tap on the p in io n w ith a soft faced
ham m er.
7. W ith a long d rift, tap on in n e r race o f o u ter p in io n
b earin g to rem ove p in io n oil seal, slinger, gasket,
o u ter p in io n cone and ro ller and shim pack. T ag
shim pack fo r reassem bly.
8. Should inspection in d icate necessity, p in io n b earin g
cups can be rem oved from c a rrie r using a long d rift
and ham m er. Rem ove shim s and oil slinger w hich
are located behind the in n e r b e a rin g cup. T ag
shim s for reassem bly.
9. Rem ove re a r p in io n b e a rin g using J-22912, and an
a rb o r press.

Inspection
1. C lean all gears and b e a rin g s in clean in g solvent
and inspect all b earin g cups, races and rollers for
scoring, ch ip p in g or evidence o f excessive w ear. On
p in io n b earin g rollers, inspect large end o f rollers
for w ear. T his is w here w ear is m ost ev ident on
tapered roller bearings.
2. Inspect p in io n splines an d flange splines for
evidence o f excessive w ear.
3. Inspect rin g g ear and p in io n teeth fo r possible
scoring, cracking or ch ip p in g .
4. Inspect differential case fo r cracks or scores or side
gears, th ru st w ashers, and p in io n th ru st faces.
5. Check fit o f differential side gears in case.
6. Check fit o f side gears and axle sh a ft splines.
7. Inspect differential p in io n s h a ft and spacer fo r
scoring or evidence o f excessive w ear.
DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Reassembly
1. A ssem ble new w ashers to side gears. A pply a small
am o u n t o f hypoid lu b rica n t on the side g e a r hubs.
2. A ssem ble p in io n gears a n d new w ashers onto cross
shaft.
3. Place side gears, p in io n gears, cross sh aft and
w ashers into flanged h a lf o f case.
4. A ssem ble top h a lf o f case to bottom h alf, m aking
sure scribe m arks are aligned.
5. A ssem ble body bolts finger tig h t. T h en tig h ten bolts
altern ately to specifications.
6. Install rin g g ear to d ifferen tial case.
7. Install rin g gear-to-case bolts finger tight, then
tighten a ltern ately to specifications.
