N O T E : P roduction p re lo a d in g o f the differ
en tial b earings is accom plished by the use o f
cast iron p relo ad shim . T hese shim s can n o t
be used w hen reb u ild in g the c a rrie r as they
m ay break w hen tap p ed in to place.

Install left shim first, th en w edge rig h t shim
betw een b earin g cup a n d spacer. P osition shim so
th at c h a m fe red side is o u tw ard o r next to spacer. If
shim does not have sufficient c h a m fe r o r lead
aro u n d O .D . to allow easy in sta lla tio n w ith o u t
scraping spacer, file o r g rin d c h a m fe r before
installing.

If difficulty is en co u n tered in in stallin g shim ,
p a rtially rem ove case an d slide case and shim into
position. T ap shim into position, using a soft faced
h am m er, w hile ro tatin g d ifferen tial case w ith free
h an d as shown in F igure 9B.

Install b e arin g caps in o rig in a l p o sitio n an d torque
to 60 ft. lbs.
N O T E : At this point, the d ifferen tial side
b earin g s are p ro p erly p relo ad ed . If any
adju stm en ts are re q u ire d in la te r procedures,
m ake sure the p relo ad re m a in s as established
in step 9. If backlash is ch an g ed in later
steps, be sure the
total
thickness o f the two
shim packs does not change.

M ount a dial in d icato r on the c a rrie r an d check the
backlash betw een the rin g g e a r an d pin io n , as
shown in Figure 10B. T he backlash should be
w ith in the ran g e o f 0.005"-0.008". Check g ear lash
