the drive pinion. Install a new collapsible spacer
into position.

Press fro n t b earin g onto drive pin io n .
7.
L ubricate the oil seal lips w ith a lithium -base
extrem e pressure lu b rican t, an d install the seal in
the re ta in e r bore. Use J-24434 w ith d riv er h an d le
J-8092. Press the seal in to the bore until it seats
ag ain st in te rn al shoulder.
8.
Install p in io n flange a n d oil deflector onto the
splines, then install lock w ash er an d new p in io n nut.
9.
C lam p the p inion flange in to a vise. Install J-8614-
l l as in figure 8E. T ig h te n the n u t to achieve
p ro p e r b earin g preload.

P ro p er preload is a tta in e d w hen ro ta tio n a l
torque required to ro ta te the p in io n is 25-35 in.
lbs. fo r new bearings, o r 5-15 in. lbs. fo r used
bearings.

T ighten p inion nut to a p p ro x im ately 350 ft. lbs.,
then take a torque re a d in g as show n in figure
15E, using J-5853.

CAUTION:
Over-tightening o f pinion nut may
collapse spacer too much, requiring its
replacement.
Installation and Adjustment
1.
E xam ine the head o f the drive p in io n fo r a p in io n
d ep th code num ber.
2.
C om pare the d epth code n u m b e r w ith the n u m b er
on the o rig in al pinion. Use the follow ing ch art to
select the p ro p e r shim fo r p re lim in a ry setting o f
p in io n depth.
3.
R efer to the thickness o f the shim recorded ea rlie r
in P inion R em oval procedures. Increase or decrease

Place the p in io n shim as d e te rm in e d in step 3 onto
the ca rrie r housing, m ak in g sure the bolt holes
align w ith those o f ca rrie r, a n d th a t the m ating
surfaces are clean and free fro m fo reig n m aterial.
5.
Place the p in io n re ta in e r assem bly into position,
and align bolt holes to c a rrie r. Install re tain in g
bolts and tig h ten in a crosswise m an n er. T orque to
specifications.
6.
Follow ing drive p in io n service, a C ontact P attern
Check m ust be m ade.
CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS
F o u r adjustm ents are essential fo r p ro p e r o p e ra tio n o f
the differential and its rela ted p arts. T hese adjustm ents
are a) Pinion B earing P reload, b) Side B earing Preload,
c) P inion D ep th and d) R ing G e a r-to -P in io n Backlash.
P in io n B earing P reload is set to specifications in step 9
o f "D riv e P inion R eassem bly".
Side B earing Preload is set to specifications in step 6 o f
"D iffe ren tial C ase—In stallatio n an d A d ju stm en t".
Follow ing service to the D ifferen tial assem bly or to the
D rive P inion, the P in io n D e p th an d the R in g -G ear-to -
